Horns in Our Life

Y'all, I have to tell you about something that happened to me this morning that completely caught me off guard, made me laugh, and honestly gave me a whole new perspective for the week. I was going about my regular morning routine when all of a sudden, I heard it. Beep... beep... beep. Three sharp blasts of a horn right outside. Now, you know how we are when we’re in our own little world inside the house. You hear a random noise outside, and your first thought is always, "Oh, that’s nothing," or "That's just the neighbors." We completely write it off. We don't think it's what it actually is until we hear it a second or a third time, and that inner voice finally says, “Alright, let me go check this out.” So, I finally walked over to look, and low and behold, it was the trash man!
Turns out, he was running way earlier than his usual schedule today. He knew if he just drove on by like normal, I was going to completely miss the pickup this week and be stuck with a overflowing bin for seven whole days. He didn't have to stop. He didn't have to care. It wasn’t in his job description to make sure I kept up with his early schedule. But he sat out there and blew that horn three times just to make sure I didn't get left behind. It was so funny to me in the moment, but underneath the laugh, I felt this overwhelming wave of appreciation. That small, simple act of kindness completely saved my week.
It got me thinking about how we handle our own lives when we are trying to stay strong and carry it all. So many of us are running around completely exhausted, trying to manage the house, the kids, the jobs, and the endless to-do lists. We get so locked into our own heads that we start to tune out the world around us. Sometimes, life throws us a curveball and things happen way earlier or heavier than we planned for. And in those moments, we get these tiny wake-up calls.

• A friend checking in out of nowhere.
• A sudden moment of clarity when we're doing the dishes.
• A little inner nudge telling us to slow down before we crash.

But just like that car horn, we usually ignore the first alert. We tell ourselves we're fine. We keep pushing, keep grinding, and keep pretending we have it all under control until the noise gets too loud to ignore. You don't have to wait until you are completely buried to look up. It is okay to listen to the warning signs. It is okay to admit that the schedule changed and you need a second to catch your breath.
What I loved most about the trash man today was that he reminded me of what community is supposed to look like. We are supposed to look out for each other. When you see a sister running a little behind, or struggling to keep up with the weight of her week, you don't just drive on past and leave her in the dust. You beep the horn. You check on her. You extend that extra bit of grace to help her catch up. To every single woman reading this who feels like she is barely keeping her head above water this week: stay strong. You are incredibly resilient, even on the days when you feel entirely off-schedule. Don't be afraid to lean into the people who are trying to look out for you, and don't forget to keep your eyes open for the folks who might need you to blow the horn for them today, too.
