Laughter Wins

Y'all, family has a way of completely disarming you when you least expect it. The other day, my oldest daughter and I were right in the middle of a heated discussion. I was locked in, focused, and getting ready to really make a point. Out of nowhere, she looks at me, completely serious, and says, "Mom, I just love how your eyebrows do when you think you’re about to go off on somebody." My entire brain just went blank. She said like forreal they be moving. I stood there completely confused because, first of all, that is not what we are discussing right now! And second of all... okay, fine, I do be making expressing my feelings with my face! But just like that, the main issue we were arguing about was completely dismissed and forgotten. We both were like OMG, crazy laughing. This has actually become a pattern for us over the last few years. We will start a disagreement completely serious, and within two minutes, we end up cracking up. Something is always funny with her, and honestly, it’s taught me a beautiful lesson about communication. So many times in life, we hold onto our anger like it’s a prize. We want to be right, we want to get our point across, and we want to ensure the other person hears every single word. But what are we sacrificing just to "win" an argument? Sometimes, the best way to handle tension isn't to push harder; it's to lean into the joy. A little bit of humor can break down walls that a thousand loud words could never penetrate. As our kids grow up, our relationships with them change. They start seeing us as real people, EYEBROWS and all. Learning to transition from strict authority into a space where you can share a genuine, belly-deep laugh in the middle of a tense moment is a beautiful thing. If you are facing friction with someone you love this week, try to find the light moment. Don't be so locked into being right that you miss the chance to just laugh it out. Life is too short, and those moments of laughter are the ones we’re going to remember. Now go pray through it...don't just go through it.
